Clean-Tech-Surged

Despite a weak global economy, investments in clean technology such as solar power and energy efficiency rose 13% worldwide last year and 30% in North America, a research firm reports. North America, which accounted for 76% of global investments, raised $6.81 billion last year. Its total number of deals, 470, was up 25% from 2010, according to data released by Cleantech Group. “Despite some of the well-publicized headwinds, venture capitalists continue to invest in cleantech,” the firm’s CEO, Sheeraz Haji, said in a veiled reference to the bankruptcy of California-based solar manufacturer Solyndra. “Based on our historical data, we believe 2012 will be an all-time-record year for global cleantech investments.” [Read this article]

Enter Stage Left: The Giant Indoor Tree

Giant-Indoor-Tree

Thoughts of indoor trees often evoke the aptly named “weeping fig” commissioned into so many soulless corporate atria, food courts and hotel lobbies. But lately we’re seeing indoor trees – both perennial favorites and snappy greenhorns – bringing bold, tonal and soulful architectural elements to interiors modern and traditional. Flora Grubb, landscape designer and owner of the eponymous San Francisco nursery, has singled out a few of her favorite trees that adapt well indoors. She advises selecting mature specimens, as trees often take years to grow up. All of her picks, she said, keep their green year-round and tolerate dry air, pests, confined root space and the lower light of the indoors. Most require little more than weekly watering and occasional pruning. And all enjoy indirect light and grow with ease to eight feet and up, blending in while standing out sculpturally, like a favorite work of art. [Read this article]

13-Year-Old’s Solar Invention Sparks Debate

Date: 01/10/2012 | Source: Mother Nature Network
13-Year-Old-Solar-Invention

Two years ago, when Aidan Dwyer was just 11 years old, he went hiking in the woods with his parents and he took a good long look at the trees. He wondered why the leaves grew the way they did and wondered if their patterns could somehow be used to improve solar power collection. With a little research, over the course of the next two years, he built a solar collector with panels arrayed like the leaves on a tree and compared their output to those of a traditional, flat solar panel. He compared measurements and found that his tree structure’s numbers were higher. Excitedly, the now 13-year-old submitted his results to the Young Naturalist Awards, a national contest run by the American Museum of Natural History, and was picked as one of 12 winners. And that’s when the real controversy began. Many scientists first lauded Aidan for his “out-of-the-box” thinking, but there was one little problem with his design: Aidan had measured and compared voltage when what he really needed to calculate was power. An Energy-Saving Socket Concept That’s Not For The Easily Startled

Energy-Saving-Socket

Although it’s uncertain if this will ever pan out beyond the conceptual stage - and it’s not recommend to those who are easily startled – the idea behind the Red Dot Design Concept Award-winning PumPing Tap is certainly a conversation starter. It’s a spring-loaded electrical socket that aims to put an end to vampire power, juice that’s drawn from plugged-in appliances and devices when they’re not being used but remain in standby mode. Here’s how the PumPing Tap works: If, for example, you’ve just used the microwave oven but failed to unplug it when you’re done, a lighted ring on the socket turns from blue to red. After 10 minutes if you still haven’t used the microwave or unplugged it, the grand finale occurs: a spring mechanism ejects the plug right out of the socket. Pop! [Read this article]

Jacksonville Police Cars Charging On Solar Power

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is letting the sun shine in, and some of its officers are getting a charge out of it. Solar charging panels on some police cars allow officers to take advantage of sun power. The average police car drains two 12-volt batteries a year due to all of the electronics and lights it has to operate. The solar panels help save gas too, said Assistant Chief John Lamb, in charge of the Sheriff’s Office’s logistics and general support division. “We wanted to look for alternatives to combat the problems and solar is free,” Lamb said. The basic Chevrolet Impala police cruiser packs a 230-horsepower V-6 gasoline engine with a heavy-duty 12-volt battery. Add spotlights, flashlight charger, radio and emergency lights as well as laptop computer, and that can tax the battery. [Read this article]
