In nine days, on April 22, 2010, the United States will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, a day created in 1970 to honor and promote grassroots environmentalism. Four decades ago, an estimated 20 million Americans took to the streets demanding action on environmental issues, sparking the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency later that year. This year, the EPA is calling on Americans to pledge five “green” actions to integrate into their lives. Other organizations are encouraging Americans to make positive environmental change through a number of unique suggestions and creative projects.
