“Wedding Can Couple” Hits 400,000 Can Recycling Goal

Andrea Parrish and Peter Geyer — aka the “Wedding Can Couple” — say they’ve reached their goal of recycling 400,000 aluminum cans to pay for their July 31 nuptials. Parrish, who grows organic vegetables in her front yard in Spokane, Wash., told USA Today’s GreenHouse in January that she figured recycling cans would be an eco-friendly way to fund their $3,800 DIY wedding. She set up a website and word spread quickly. The couple says it took 197 days to reach their goal, collecting on average one can about every 40 seconds. Want To Beat The Summer Heat? EPA Offers Cooling Tips

As summer approaches, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is offering low- to no-cost energy-efficient cooling tips to beat the heat. The EPA says the typical U.S. household spends almost 20% of its utility bills on cooling, but it can significantly lower that amount. “You can save energy, save money, and help fight climate change,” it says in an announcement slated for tomorrow. Its Energy Star program, which it co-runs with the Department of Energy, offers more than a dozen tips such as using a programmable thermostat. Green Fairs Are Sprouting Up Nationwide

What’s a fair without rickety roller coasters and pie-baking competitions? How about wind power technology, Segway test rides and the nation’s fastest vegetable oil-powered car?
