Today is World Oceans Day, and as the disastrous Gulf oil spill continues, environmentalists are using this holiday to spotlight the need to protect the seas. “It’s a terrible disaster and it’s raising awareness around the country and the world about the ocean’s fragility to a large extent,” said Bill Mott, director of The Ocean Project, a network of groups promoting World Oceans Day, according to MSNBC. Want To Beat The Summer Heat? EPA Offers Cooling Tips

As summer approaches, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is offering low- to no-cost energy-efficient cooling tips to beat the heat. The EPA says the typical U.S. household spends almost 20% of its utility bills on cooling, but it can significantly lower that amount. “You can save energy, save money, and help fight climate change,” it says in an announcement slated for tomorrow. Its Energy Star program, which it co-runs with the Department of Energy, offers more than a dozen tips such as using a programmable thermostat. Green Fairs Are Sprouting Up Nationwide

What’s a fair without rickety roller coasters and pie-baking competitions? How about wind power technology, Segway test rides and the nation’s fastest vegetable oil-powered car? That’s what attendees found at last weekend’s Green Solutions Expo at Orange County Great Park in Irvine, the latest in a string of fairs focused more on the environment and eco-friendly innovation than on hog races, arts and crafts shows and deep-fried nostalgia. “A couple of years ago, a fair like this wouldn’t have worked,” said Rod Roberts, a representative of Blue Island Plumbing in Fountain Valley. “But more people now are willing to put their money on a green product.” Click here to read more about this fair and others like it, maybe even set up one in your hometown!

Which Global Consumers Are The Greenest? Not Americans

National Geographic released their third annual survey analyzing the behavior of global consumers towards green. The survey looked at 65 different areas relating to household energy use, transportation, food and consumer goods. The top three countries were the developing economies of India, Brazil, China and Mexico. While the United States was at the bottom of the list for the third year in a row, their score increased with environmental awareness affecting the way Americans live and use energy.
